Description:

Wise people think ahead to their inevitable death. Will it be quick and peaceful or painful and prolonged?

You hope for the best outcome, but never know.

As a standby, everybody would be wise have an Advance Directive concerning their end of life care. Such documents are often called &#039;Living Wills&#039; in everyday parlance.

An Advance Directive helps ensure that your wishes regarding your own end-of-life care are followed, in the event that you are unable to speak for yourself, due to illness or incapacity, such as Alzheimer&#039;s Disease.

ERGO offers this important document as a downloadable document (PDF) for $5.00. This particular Advance Directive concerns a person&#039;s wishes at the end of life should they become incompetent through senile dementia or Alzheimer&#039;s Disease.

Alzheimer&#039;s disease now affects 15 million globally, and nearly 5 million people in the United States, and and as many as 16 million Americans are predicted to have the disease by the year 2050. President Reagan suffered from the disease for the last ten years of his life.

Alzheimer&#039;s affects about 10 percent of people over the age of 65 and by the age of 85, half the population has it. It is the ninth leading cause of death among those aged 65 and older.

Fatal and incurable, Alzheimer&#039;s starts out as vague memory loss and progresses quickly. Patients lose their ability to find their way around, to recognize loved ones and eventually cannot care for themselves. Treatments can help slow the progression of the disease but cannot cure it.

Named after German physician Alois Alzheimer who first described the condition in 1906, it is marked by plaques and tangles around and inside brain cells. Sometimes described as tiny &#039;Brillo pads&#039;, the plaques are made up of a brain protein called beta amyloid. Another protein, called tau, becomes deformed and makes up the tangles inside nerve cells. As the brain cells die, the brain shrinks and loses its wrinkly appearance.

Drawn up by Faye Girsh, EdD, former chief executive of the Hemlock Society USA, the Advance Directive available through ERGO does not claim to be an enforceable legal document. It is an honest expression of a person&#039;s wishes while they still have all their marbles. Intelligent, caring people would likely respect it as a human right.

Dr. Girsh calls her document &quot; My Last Wishes (in the event of irreversible cognitive decline)&quot; and outlines how you would wish to be treated if a brain affliction ever affected you.

Description:

Final Exit on VHS Description:

The ‘Final Exit on VHS’ video is an adjunct resource to ‘Final Exit, 3rd edition book’. This guidance is for the possible use by a terminally or hopelessly ill competent adult who wishes to avoid further unrelieved pain and distress.

For those who want detailed illustrated advice on how to bring their terminal suffering to a peaceful, nonviolent end, this video produced by journalist and author Derek Humphry, is a vital companion to his book &#039;Final Exit&#039;. Humphry, who founded the original Hemlock Society, and ran it for its first twelve years, provided the direction and spoken voice in this video adaptation of his famous &#039;how-to&#039; book which was the #1 New York Times nonfiction bestseller in 1991, and which remains consistently popular today.

Suicide (a.k.a. rational suicide) is no longer a crime but assisted suicide can be (except in Oregon and Washington, where doctors may do it for residents under tight guidelines), so Humphry warns about legal matters connected with voluntary euthanasia and assisted suicide. The video demonstrates there is no need for a Dr. Kevorkian, or any other doctor, if a careful and simple plan of action is followed by a person who wishes to handle their own euthanasia, self-deliverance, or assisted suicide.

The video describes the ways to mix and ingest lethal drugs -- the so-called &#039;peaceful pill&#039; method -- and closely illustrates how a dying person may have an assisted death using an inert gas available in stores, using what is is known as the ‘helium hood technique’.

The author, Derek Humphry, who now has more than 30 years experience in the death with dignity movement, helped his first wife Jean to die when suffering a lingering death from breast cancer. His book on that event, &#039;Jean&#039;s Way&#039; is a cult classic. Five years after her death he founded the Hemlock Society at his new home in Santa Monica. Derek built the group into a national organization between 1980 and 1992. (Hemlock was merged in 2003 into another organization, Compassion and Choices.)

Today Humphry runs the Euthanasia Research and Guidance Organization (ERGO), a nonprofit organization based outside of Eugene, Oregon. Helium hood kits which have been used by hundreds of people who wished peacefully to end their lives because of protracted terminal or hopeless illness. Unfortunately, currently there are no reliable suppliers of the kits. Thus it is necessary to make your own kit if you wish to explore this form of self-deliverance. This right-to-die method is legal because it is not assisted suicide nor voluntary euthanasia.

Derek Humphry, author of the world’s best-known how-to book on choices in dying, “Final Exit: The Practicalities of Self-Deliverance and Assisted Suicide for the Dying,” has written this detailed guide to how to make a helium hood kit.

This PDF document, with illustrations, outlines the following points:

• Materials and Items Needed for Helium Method

• Sourcing the Parts and Materials

• Location and Setup

• Preparing the Tanks and Tubing

• Making the “Hood”

• Instructions for Hastening Death (in the event of irreversible illness that is causing unbearable suffering)

• Cautions

• DVD Images and Illustrations

• Book and Video Resources

eBook Description:

The runaway bestseller ‘Final Exit’ brought its author a huge response of readers writing him with their own experiences with dying and death, sometimes involving voluntary euthanasia, assisted suicide or self-deliverance. Now, twenty years after the initial appearance of that remarkable and pioneering book, Derek Humphry relates what additionally he has learned since.

This short ebook does not describe any new means or methods for peacefully ending one’s life; rather it emphasizes the need for planning and caring, and thoughtful conduct for a dying person and their family. Hasty, poorly considered ending of life is anathema to Humphry’s philosophy. ‘Beyond Final Exit’ discusses, for instance, ways in which a family could deal with a difficult dying process, the role of doctors, and whom to tell once the passing has occurred. A potted history of the famous Hemlock Society is included, as is a description of the work of Dignitas, in Switzerland, currently the only group in the world which will help foreigners to die.

What we have learned from the unique Death With Dignity laws in Oregon and Washington, permitting physician-assisted suicide for the dying, is discussed. Includes a listing of the nine places which by 2011 have made law reforms to permit assisted dying.

Humphry, the author of the cult classic ‘Jean’s Way’ and three other books on euthanasia, discusses the present and controversial future of the right-to-die movement which today involves the considered suicide of persons who are old and permanently sick, thus tired of life, and seek a speedy end. Perhaps, he argues, this should be made lawful after careful consideration because violent elderly suicide is already a national tragedy.

Final Exit Book Description:

The most famous textbook in euthanasia and assisted suicide. Includes unique step-by-step language for a competent adult who is terminally or hopelessly ill and wishing to bring their life to a peaceful, non-violent end. This can be achieved without Dr. Kevorkian or any doctor. Drug dosages and helium gas techniques are described and illustrated.

See what this eBook is all about. View this sample PDF containing several ‘Final Exit’ page excerpts, the table of contents and author biography.

Much the same methods are used by Dignitas in Switzerland, and the right to die groups in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Colombia, and countries where euthanasia laws have been passed. (Except for Switzerland, these laws can only be used by residents, under strict guidelines.) The American states of Oregon and Washington have voted for physician-assisted suicide -- but only for its residents who are competent adults and terminally ill.

‘Final Exit’ also outlines the legal complications connected with dying, death, hastened death, euthanasia laws, suicide, Living Wills and Advance Directives. The family aspect is discussed (‘Whom to you tell?’) and the advisability of a ‘suicide note’ (with sample) is addressed. The problems with life insurance are clarified. The difficult issues of double suicide and hastened death for persons with disabilities are frankly discussed.

Appendices references include: glossary of terms connected with dying; alternative euphemistic terms for assisted dying and death; International and US right-to-die law including the Oregon Death With Dignity Act; etc.

This digital edition of ‘Final Exit’ matches the current updated 3rd edition paperback. Both the paperback and digital edition is much updated from the earlier editions of the paperback, which date from 1991 when it was a Number One Bestseller on the New York Times nonfiction list. For instance, the first and second editions did not contain the helium gas technique now used by hundreds of people for their own euthanasia. The new edition also includes new drug dosages plus updated guidance on plastic bag and other techniques.

The digital edition of ‘Final Exit’ contains a clearly laid out, and easy to use Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, which the reader is strongly encouraged to print and complete. The tragic lessons of Terri Schiavo’s fourteen long years trapped in a persistent vegetative state, and the ugly fight over her fate, must not be lost on us.

In April of 2007, the national newspaper
USA TODAY selected ‘Final Exit’ as one of the 25 most memorable books published in the last quarter century. The papers’ editors and critics said: &quot;The topic of assisted suicide exploded in controversy in the 90’s, thanks to the Michigan pathologist Jack Kevorkian and his suicide machine, and this how-to manual [Final Exit] from an English journalist who helped his cancer-stricken first wife kill herself.&quot;

If you are asking the question ‘what is assisted suicide?’ or ‘what is euthanasia and assisted death?’ then this exit book provides the clearest answers. There is, as yet, no simple ‘peaceful pill’ for self euthanasia, and law reform is lagging behind public opinion, so until then ‘Final Exit’ is the solution.

The author, Derek Humphry, who has 30 years experience in the death with dignity movement, in 1975 helped his first wife Jean to die when suffering a lingering death from breast cancer. His book on that event, ‘Jean’s Way’ is a cult classic. Five years after her death he founded the Hemlock Society, which he ran from 1980 to 1992. (Hemlock was later merged into another organization, Compassion and Choices.)

Today Humphry runs the
Euthanasia Research and Guidance Organization (ERGO), a nonprofit organization based in Oregon. He is a policy adviser to the American group, the Final Exit Network, and to the World Federation of Right to Die Societies, of which he was president in 1988-90. Jean&#039;s Way Book Description:

This is the true, moving account of a woman with advanced terminal illness who planned to hasten her end with the help of her husband, Derek Humphry. Not only was assisted suicide against the law but it was also a huge taboo.

But Jean Humphry proceeded with her plan so that she could die in peace and dignity in her own home rather than in hospital. This was an individual decision; the couple did not know then (1975) about euthanasia and assisted suicide, which later became highly controversial as the right to die issue mushroomed. Living Wills were then just becoming known.

She had suffered for more than two years from breast cancer, and now it had spread into her whole body. She decided it was her time for an assisted death.

At Jean&#039;s request, Derek had secured a lethal overdose from a sympathetic doctor and stored it in a secure place in their home in Wiltshire, England. When the pain and distress became too great to bear, Jean asked for the drugs so that she could die that afternoon.

When she was ready, Derek mixed the lethal potion into a mug of coffee. After saying &#039;Goodbye, My Love&#039; Jean emptied the drink and died within the hour.

Three years later Derek (already a journalist on the London Sunday Times and author of &#039;Because They&#039;re Black&#039;) published this memoir. It became a bestseller in the UK and was translated into four languages.

The popularity of &#039;Jean&#039;s Way&#039; started the movement to legalize assisted suicide as a choice for competent adults at the end of life. It foreshadowed the Oregon Death With Dignity Act, in the passing of which Derek was a team player.

Derek founded the Hemlock Society USA to campaign for greater acceptance of justifiable assisted suicide and also wrote the international bestselling book &#039;Final Exit.&#039;

Both in the application of the new Oregon law and Swiss law, with legally approved ways of assisting deaths at the end of life, Jean&#039;s way is the method used. In Switzerland it is used by DIGNITAS and EXIT.

Good Life, Good Death Book Description:

For more than 30 years Derek Humphry has trail-blazed the right to die movement in America and the world. He founded the Hemlock Society USA, pioneered the Oregon Death With Dignity Act and wrote the bestselling books Jean’s Way and Final Exit. To know why he has maintained this struggle for choice in dying against powerful religious and political forces it is necessary to understand the whole man. In this candid memoir (a paperback original) he tells of his broken family, wartime experiences as a boy in England, and rising from the lowest to the highest rungs of journalism on two continents. He tells the moving story of his first wife’s terminal cancer and her way of ending it by assisted suicide which later became the model for the Oregon law. Painful episodes from his second marriage and the much publicized divorce are frankly detailed. Today Derek Humphry is regarded as the grand old man of a euthanasia movement in which he remains deeply involved. A dual citizen of the USA and the UK, he has lived in Oregon for 22 years.

• Description:

This book contains the true stories of persons dying of a terminal or hopeless illness and how they achieved their desired assisted death. It was written by journalist and author Derek Humphry ten years before his famous &#039;how-to&#039; bestseller &#039;Final Exit&#039;; nevertheless Let Me Die contains crucial drug, technical and personal information needed for successful euthanasia.

Let Me Die was the main publication of the original Hemlock Society and has helped thousands to achieve the right to die in peace and dignity.

It has been factually updated and extended over time in new editions.

&quot; But the good advice on assisted death within the book never dates,&quot; said author Humphry.

In this book the author argues that bringing about a self euthanasia is more than popping deadly pills: it concerns also family inter-personal relationships, ways to avoid legal troubles, and how not to botch what should be a peaceful and dignified death.

Legally the action is a &#039;suicide&#039; but the word more appropriately used by many persons is &#039;self-deliverance&#039; because this action is a deliberate exit at the end of life.

So-called &#039;Living Wills&#039; (Advance Directives) are advocated and discussed in the book. Such documents are a useful backup for ensuring the right to die.

The moving account of a terminally ill woman&#039;s carefully planned self-deliverance from suffering.

2003 printing updated with new preface.

Description:

Derek founded the Hemlock Society USA to campaign for greater acceptance of justifiable assisted suicide and also wrote the international bestselling book &#039;Final Exit.&#039;

Description:

<description>]]&gt;NOTE: This info is also available in an easier to read format on the ERGO Membership form web page.

Please Join ERGO

(Euthanasia Research &amp; Guidance Organization)

Help ERGO in its work to achieve &quot;Choices in Dying&quot;.

Help with scientific research into self-deliverance.

Running a nonprofit organization with worldwide visibility like ERGO requires support from people like you.

ERGO Membership: minimum annual dues $25 (USD)

As one example of our work, every day ERGO responds to dozens of students who approach us for information for their school projects. And our international electronic mailing list that is sent to more than 1,000 organizations and people requires hours of work and constant expenditure on systems and software.

ERGO is now the chief financial sponsor of the New Technology Research Group (NuTech) which is trying to find legal, painless ways of self-deliverance from a terminal or hopeless illness. (End-of-Life Choices - Hemlock as was - has from 2004 withdrawn its financial support of NuTech.) A spate of mergers is diluting the backbone of a once progressive movement. Without ERGO&#039;s help the search for the &#039;peaceful pill&#039; and other ways for self-deliverance will come to a halt.

ERGO wishes to see physician-assisted suicide become lawful everywhere, but until that day some people want to know how to end it themselves. Anyway, even under a legal system not everybody qualifies for medical assistance.

ERGO will fight for that right to be in command of one&#039;s death. But it requires knowledge.

Thus we are turning ERGO from a supporters&#039; organization to a membership organization. Annual membership fee is a minimum of $25 or whatever you might wish to pay above that.

While you are joining ERGO please also consider subscribing to ERGO&#039;s International Right-to-Die News Service mailing list (free listserv). Subscribe to the list and/or obtain more information by visiting the ERGO Right-to-Die News web page.

Please join ERGO. Thank You.
