This book contains the true stories of persons dying of a terminal or hopeless illness and how they achieved their desired assisted death. It was written by journalist and author Derek Humphry ten years before his famous 'how-to' bestseller 'Final Exit'; nevertheless Let Me Die contains crucial drug, technical and personal information needed for successful euthanasia.

Let Me Die was the main publication of the original Hemlock Society and has helped thousands to achieve the right to die in peace and dignity.

It has been factually updated and extended over time in new editions.

"But the good advice on assisted death within the book never dates," said author Humphry.

In this book the author argues that bringing about a self euthanasia is more than popping deadly pills: it concerns also family inter-personal relationships, ways to avoid legal troubles, and how not to botch what should be a peaceful and dignified death.

Legally the action is a 'suicide' but the word more appropriately used by many persons is 'self-deliverance' because this action is a deliberate exit at the end of life.

So-called 'Living Wills' (Advance Directives) are advocated and discussed in the book. Such documents are a useful backup for ensuring the right to die.
